STANTON – Repairs to a structure spanning Interstate 20 is scheduled to begin in late September. The structure is the Business Interstate 20 overpass that goes over I-20 on the west side of Stanton.

The first stage of the project will involve removing the cable median barrier and paving the median to provide a place for traffic to cross over the median. Bridge repairs will require lane closures that will significantly reroute traffic. In addition to having I-20 traffic to one lane in each direction, a lane on top of the overpass will also be closed. Temporary traffic signals will be in use to handle one-way traffic on top of the overpass while it is down to one lane.

The speed limit on I-20 will be reduced to 65 miles per hour in the work zone. Concrete traffic barriers will also be in use to help channel traffic in the proper direction.

Width restrictions of 12 feet will be place on I-20. Width restrictions of 11 feet will be place on BI-20. The weight limit on BI-20 will also be restricted to 80,000 pounds.

The repairs are necessary because of multiple bridge strikes from oversized loads that have damaged the overpass.

Delays are expected. Motorists are asked to find alternate routes if possible. Motorists are also reminded that state law requires them to obey any flaggers or warning signs encountered in the work zone. Is it also important that motorists stay away from construction equipment. Motorists should not follow construction vehicles because those vehicles will be entering the work area where motorists are prohibited.

The five-month project is scheduled to be completed in February 2018.

Gibson & Associates of Balch Springs, Texas, won the project with a low bid of $1,987,502.23.
