Clack Street is among the busiest in the City of Abilene. The frequent turns and speed variations coupled with acceleration from side streets and driveways have created a highly stressful situation for drivers going to and from the many destinations adjacent to the road and city streets.
Persuading thru traffic to use the left two lanes of this stretch of frontage road should permit exiting and entering traffic to do so in a less-stressful environment. Reducing speed variation and weaving while increasing driver expectation and overall safety in this locale are the end goals.

Planned Improvements

This plan, from Southwest Drive to FM 89, is seen as a cost effective (paint and sign only), interim step to improving the driving experience for the traveling public along this stretch of frontage road. The project is estimated to cost about $23,250 and the contractor is L&L Company. The project is expected to start late July or early August and take about two weeks to complete. Improving the safety of the traveling public and the patrons of the many retail stores, restaurants and other businesses in this vicinity can be a win-win for all involved.

Construction Considerations

TxDOT is committed to working with the public to minimize impacts from construction projects as much as possible. The projected construction schedule begins on July 31, 2017. Some traffic delays are expected and traffic will be detoured. A construction open house to share information about the detours is scheduled for Thursday, July 6, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the New Hope Church, 3122 S. Clack Street. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be no presentation and staff will be on hand to answer questions.
